I use Winamp for audio and Sasami2k for video, though for the nontechnical I'd just let WiMP handle video.AVG and Kaspersky Antivirus seem pretty popular in this forum. "Critical" is a must have, "Recommended" means "use your judgement", and "Pick of the month" means "potentially craptacular". You should get most of the other stuff off Windows Update. IE definitely needs an update-take it up to 6, and do it first so you don't waste your time downloading patches for an old IE.
